About Hue

Hue is a region rich in cultural heritage. To this day, no other area possesses such a vast quantity of relics that still retain their original form as this former capital.

On the north bank of the Hương River (Perfume River) stands a complex of palaces and citadels built in a defensive style, forming a perimeter nearly 11km long. This precious complex, comprising over 100 architectural works, truly reflects the life of the Nguyễn Dynasty kings and mandarins.

Amidst the hills on the south bank of the Hương River lie the incredibly beautiful tombs of the Nguyễn Emperors. The four most famous tombs are each known for a style that matches the emperor's character and the tomb's architecture: the majestic Gia Long Tomb, the imposing Minh Mạng Tomb, the poetic Tự Đức Tomb, and the magnificent Khải Định Tomb.

Hue is also an important center of Buddhism. Dozens of pagodas built over 300 years ago and hundreds of temples and pagodas constructed in the early 20th century still exist in and around Hue. Furthermore, Hue is regarded as the origin of royal court music and is known for its many famous traditional dishes and exquisite handicrafts.

As the only city in the country that still preserves the appearance of a Medieval city and the complete architecture of a monarchy, Hue has become a huge and invaluable museum. Consequently, the government has classified the relics of the ancient capital of Hue as an exceptionally valuable asset, and in December 1993, UNESCO recognized Hue as a World Cultural Heritage Site.

When is the best time to visit Hue?

While the climate of the entire country is generally divided into dry and rainy seasons, Hue primarily has two different seasons: the rainy season and the less rainy season. The rainy season lasts from September to the end of December, and the less rainy season extends from late December to about April. The remaining months can be quite sunny, as Hue is also located in a region with high heat radiation and high temperatures.

Tourists visit Hue at various times. While domestic tourists often come from early May to late September, foreign tourists tend to visit between October and late April. The most ideal weather in Hue is usually in November.

Transportation in Hue

The Hue cyclos (pedicabs) are convenient because they are wide and have high canopies, which can be folded up to carry passengers politely and safely or used to transport goods when necessary. Currently, the cyclo transport service is the most appealing and suitable way to get around the inner city. Using a cyclo, you can leisurely explore this beautiful and ancient city.

Given its advantage as a tourist city, it is easy to find a suitable bicycle or motorbike for rent at a reasonable price. Bike and motorbike rental locations are concentrated on Hùng Vương Street, spanning the distance from Trường Tiền Bridge to the intersection of Hùng Vương and Nguyễn Tri Phương. The second area is Lê Lợi Street, the "Western street" opposite Hương Giang Hotel, and streets like Phạm Ngũ Lão and Chu Văn An also offer rentals.

Hue's Cuisine

Known for their elegance, the people of Hue are also sophisticated in their dining habits, not only in selecting ingredients but also in the meticulous preparation, seasoning, and elaborate presentation. Each dish is elevated to the level of an artistic masterpiece.

It can be said that people in Hue approach gastronomy not merely in the simple biological sense, but they savor it with all their senses: smell, sight, and even... hearing. As the late writer Nguyễn Tuân once remarked, Hue people like to "eat with their eyes."

Despite mobilizing all their senses for nutrition, Hue people aim to "eat just for the fragrance and the flowers," as they often say about themselves. This peaceful moderation can be observed in the tiny bánh bèo (water fern cake) that practically melts on the tongue, the wafer-thin bánh nậm (steamed savory rice cake), the colorful bánh canh Nam Phổ (thick noodle soup) bowl arranged like a painting, or the cool chè bắp Cồn Hến (sweet corn soup) whose fragrance follows you into your dreams.

Hue dishes, whether they are luxurious delicacies or simple, rustic fare, make anyone who tastes them once sigh with praise and "savor in silence" (ngậm mà nghe), leaving them with a lasting, unforgettable flavor. It seems that through the skillful hands of its women, food in Hue is infused with the city's soul and a touch of the spiritual.

Notably, Hue still preserves over 1,000 dishes cooked in the Hue style, including the royal dishes (ngự thiện) of the Nguyễn kings. The royal menu featured dozens of luxurious dishes, prepared and organized with great effort, meticulousness, and intricacy. The popular folk dishes, a rich menu of hundreds of items, are skillfully and cleverly prepared by Hue housewives with excellent cooking techniques, charming flavors, attractive colors, and a focus on quality over quantity; the art of arranging the dishes is beautiful, and the art of tasting is refined.

Furthermore, anyone who has enjoyed a Hue vegetarian meal (dishes made from various plants) will surely never forget the excellent, pure flavor of Hue's cuisine.
